KUCHING – Sarawak has marked a milestone in its livestock industry with the successful export of 800 live pigs to Selangor, reinforcing its ambition to become a net food exporter by 2030.
Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Anak Utom said the move reflects the capability of local farmers to enter and compete in the Peninsular Malaysia market.
“This is a big but realistic move. We’ve been exporting to Singapore since 2017, and now farmers from Sibu, Singai, and Selangau are ready to produce more for external markets,” he said on Friday.
Dr Rundi noted that demand for pork in Selangor is high, with daily consumption at about 3,000 pigs. “We’ve just sent 800. It’s a small number, but it shows we can compete,” he added.
Sarawak’s strong farm biosecurity systems have kept African Swine Fever (ASF) under control and allowed the state to maintain its foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-free status — a competitive edge recognised by ASEAN neighbours.
Dr Rundi also stressed the state’s commitment to price stability. Pork prices in Sarawak are about RM32 per kilogram, significantly lower than RM45 in Sabah and RM40–RM45 in Peninsular Malaysia.
He further revealed plans to establish a veterinary school in Bintulu in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
“At present, we only have 15 veterinary officers in the public sector, compared to Brazil’s 4,000,” he said.
